A traditional, newly refurbished hotel in a beautiful Lake District setting, including breakfast and three-course dinner, plus tea and scones on arrival

Few hotels can boast their own waterfall, but somewhere in its 40 acres of private land, Lodore Falls Hotel has ticked that too-often-empty box. Overlooking the beautiful Derwentwater Lake, where imposing mountain ranges are mirrored in the glassy water, this stately TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence-awarded retreat is everything you could want from a stay in the Lake District.

This family-run hotel has recently renovated its entire ground floor, whilst retaining the heritage of the original building, which is forged out of Lakeland slate. Interiors incorporate contemporary furniture with plush fabrics, plenty of soft seats for guests to sink into after a long walk, and a library area designed specifically to cater for guests with dogs. The local landscapes are evoked in the stylish colour scheme, with soft green, burnt orange and aubergine making the edit.

Besides exploring the stunning National Park, the leisure options here are plentiful - and should your dramatic surrounds tempt you, wander out on the wooden pier and hire a sailboat or kayak for a peaceful way to absorb the scenery.

Good to know

Please be aware that the hotel's leisure facilities and spa will be closed until summer 2018; during this time, the building works area will be fenced off and, whilst the majority of the hotel will not be affected, there will be intermittent noise throughout.

Please also note that the waterfall cannot be accessed from the hotel grounds at present, but can be reached via a short stroll.

The AA Rosette-awarded restaurant serves classic gourmet cuisine using seasonal local produce. Dishes such as pan-seared sea bass and stuffed loin of lamb are just what the heart desires in this green and rural setting, and the cheese board demonstrates some of the creamiest blues in the region. Please note that a smart-casual dress code is required for the restaurant.

The Lake District National Park is the largest protected National Park in England and boasts miles of mountainous scenery, lakes and oak woodland. The hotel is located in the Borrowdale Valley, south of Derwentwater Lake, and is perfectly located for both lowland activity and hill-walking. There are a number of National Trust sites around, plus numerous olde-world pubs and country restaurants.
